Samy grew up in Rabat, Morocco's capital city. He was considered as one of the modernisers of Andalusian music. He also shortened pieces, increasing their spirit and making them more easily 'digestible'. In 1960, he settled in Canada. He became a rabbi in 1967 and from then on kept to religious songs. The dismay of many of his fans led him to get back to singing secular music.
