Hans Werner Henze composed his Symphony No.1 when he was just 20 years old. Henze himself later described this original version as a "complete failure." a revised version of the work was penned in 1964. The slow movement was basically unchanged; however the outer movements of this now three-movement work were not mere revisions but completely new compositions. The Symphony No.6 was a product of the composer's interest in the political left and in Cuba specifically. Premi+¿red in Havana, it is highly influenced by Cuban folk music. Marek Janowski leads the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in these key works of the 20th Century.
